Day 2 Subject: What will your podcasts be about, [firstname]? Hi [firstname], Before you start working on your podcasts, you must first decide on your niche. This is the subject or topic that you're going to cover. You must define your niche before you do anything else. Why? Well, in podcasting it doesn't pay to be a generalist. People will download and listen to your podcasts because they're interested in a particular subject – just like they tune into their favorite TV show because they like it. If you're podcasting on (say) internet marketing one week and solar energy on another, you're going to alienate a lot of your audience – who will simply tune out and stop listening. So decide on your niche before you do anything. This needn't be too difficult. You might podcast on a topic that's related to your existing business. You might choose a hobby or other interest. Just make sure it's something you enjoy talking about, because you're going to be talking about it an awful lot! The next thing you need to decide is what format your podcasts are going to take. Will they be lectures by you, interviews, conversations between you and another person, “round table discussions” where you get a bunch of people together to discuss a topic, or something else altogether? Regardless of what you choose, research each podcast's topic carefully. You might not be an expert on the subject (especially in the early days) but you need to at least SOUND like you know what you're talking about! Warmly, [Your Name] PS. I go into more detail in my guide to podcasting success. You can read all about it here: [link to sales page].
