Choosing the right niche is the key to having a successful online business. 

So what is a niche?

A niche is online marketing-speak for a market, or more specifically, the section of the market you sell to.  That's what makes finding the right niche so important.  Actually, there's no such thing as the “right” niche, just the right niche for you!

How do you find the right niche for you?  There are two schools of thought on this…

The first is that you should draw up a list of topics you find interesting, then drill down to see if there is money to be made in that niche.  This is good if you plan on creating your own products, or providing a service like coaching.  If you're already an expert, that gives you a head-start over other newbies (online marketing-speak for newcomer).  The downside is that some of these niches are so small, there just isn't enough business to go round.

The other school of thought is to just find niches that pay the most.  Most of these are so-called “evergreen” niches – things like weight loss, dog training, stock market trading, and so on.  These niches can be highly lucrative, but can be overcrowded and competitive. 

Here are some tools that can help you find the right niche for you – some are free, some you have to pay for, but they're all useful:

https://www.google.com/trends/ A site that can tell you what topics people are searching for now.
https://www.terapeak.com/ Find hot sellers on eBay (if it's hot there, it's likely to be popular everywhere). This is a paid-for service, but there is a 7 day free trial.
https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/ Lots of useful data here.
https://www.quantcast.com/ Find out what's popular in different countries/market share/demographics and more. There are both free and paid for versions.
http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/217345 This article from Entrepreneur magazine was published way back in 2010, but is still relevant.
