There are many reasons why owning your own online business beats a bricks and mortar business hands down.  The startup costs are cheaper for one thing, and you can reach a much wider audience.  The biggest advantage, though, is the flexibility that owning your own online business can bring.

If you just want some extra income, you can fit working on your online business around your job. If you're a stay at home mom (or dad), you can generate a full time income working part time on your own business when the kids are at school.
